Der VC-231 bietet zwei Betriebsarten, CPE und CO, für die Anwendung: Der CPE-Modus wird auf der Client-Seite verwendet und der CO-Modus auf der zentralen Seite. Der CPE- oder CO-Modus kann mit Hilfe eines eingebauten DIP-Schalters eingestellt werden. Für Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindungen müssen ein VC-231 im CPE-Modus und ein VC-231 im CO-Modus als ein Wandlerpaar eingerichtet werden, um die Verbindung herzustellen.
