Highlights
Goodyear, based in Luxembourg, offers high-quality tyres, smart mobility solutions and a Europe-wide service network for leading transport and logistics companies across Europe.
For its automated tyre analysis and predictive maintenance system, Goodyear needed a reliable LTE router with comprehensive security features.
The choice fell on the RUT951 4G router from Teltonika Networks. It ensures reliable and secure LTE Cat 4 connectivity, thereby forming a vital foundation for the smooth operation of this IoT solution.
- Reliable LTE Cat 4 connectivity
- Secure data transmission
- Proactive tyre maintenance
- Stable 4G connection with the RUT951
The Challenge:
tyre issues
The global road freight transport market was estimated at US$105.96 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to US$136.38 billion by 2033, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5 per cent. Numerous factors contribute to the safe and efficient transport of goods. A comparatively unassuming component plays a crucial role in this: the tyre.
Tyre safety, as well as the regular inspection and maintenance of tyres, are of central importance to road freight transport. Only tyres in perfect condition can guarantee safe and reliable fleet operations and help to avoid unplanned downtime.
Given this importance, companies are increasingly investing in innovative technologies that can continuously monitor the condition of tyres whilst helping to reduce maintenance and operating costs.
One such solution is CheckPoint – an automated system for tyre analysis and predictive maintenance developed by our partner Goodyear. CheckPoint regularly records and analyses various parameters relating to the condition of the tyres. This enables potential problems to be identified at an early stage, before they lead to one of the biggest cost factors for fleet operators: unplanned downtime.
The automation required for this is based on various components such as sophisticated cameras, lasers and sensors. To ensure that the collected data can be analysed centrally, these devices must be reliably connected to a cloud server. This is where a high-performance mobile router comes into play: it provides the necessary network connection and enables the data to be transmitted to the cloud, where it is analysed and the results made available immediately. Reliable connectivity is therefore an essential prerequisite for the automated operation of the system.

The Solution
Drive On, 4G Router
For its automated tyre analysis and predictive maintenance system, CheckPoint, Goodyear relies on the RUT951 4G router from Teltonika Networks.
The industrial mobile router is connected to a PC via an RJ45 interface. Both components form part of a tyre inspection system installed on the premises. At the heart of the solution is a measuring plate integrated into the floor, fitted with specialised sensors and cameras. These are connected to the PC and record, amongst other things, tread depth, tyre pressure, axle and vehicle load, as well as the vehicle registration number.
If, for example, the system is installed in a logistics centre, the tyre inspection takes place automatically: Every time a vehicle drives over the measuring plate on departure or upon returning from a job, the relevant data on the condition of the tyres is recorded. This data is then transmitted to Goodyear’s cloud server via the RUT951’s mobile network connection. Customers can access the analysed information via a display terminal, as well as through mobile and web applications.
For data transmission, the RUT951 provides an LTE Cat 4 connection, thereby offering the speed and bandwidth required for this IoT application. Furthermore, the router features various functions to enhance network availability and redundancy. These include dual-SIM with automatic failover, backup WAN and other failover scenarios. Backwards compatibility with 3G and 2G also enables its use at locations where 4G coverage is not available.
Via the RUT951, Goodyear can also establish a secure OpenVPN connection to any installed CheckPoint system. This not only protects data transmission but also enables remote access for fault diagnosis and other support tasks.
The 4G router also supports numerous industrial protocols such as MQTT, Modbus TCP and Kinesis. This allows data transmission to be flexibly adapted to the specific requirements of the application. For additional security, the RUT951 supports not only OpenVPN but also other VPN and security solutions such as ZeroTier, WireGuard and Stunnel.
The RUT951 is also designed to withstand demanding environmental conditions. Its robust aluminium housing protects the internal components during daily use, whilst the operating temperature range of –40 °C to +75 °C ensures reliable operation under a wide variety of climatic conditions.
The RUT951 thus provides Goodyear with a reliable, secure and versatile mobile connectivity solution for CheckPoint. It lays the foundation for the automated transmission of tyre data, the early detection of potential problems and the proactive planning of maintenance measures – before unplanned downtime occurs.
